I agree we should develop radically new techniques once we are in space. We have to start somewhere, and we currently have little idea how to utilize space in the ways you describe. Though, spinning things seems just as likely/unlikely to work. Your comment makes me wonder if private industry has enough money to invest in figuring out any way to refine metal in space. It honestly seems like such a huge expense that a government agency (NASA???) should be doing it instead.

I think it's very short-sighted to think you should just adapt earth bound techniques in space. Micro-gravity provides opportunities to manipulate materials in other ways. For example, heat the material with sunlight with mirrors, separate out the metal with magnets. Or you could spin the molten material in place with magnets to separate it out with centrifugal force.

Too far ahead of its time. Yeah, and its awkward for a serious student taking notes while using a mobile device. Academia is still trying to roll out advanced desktop 3D models which is better suited for classroom learning like Zygote Body http://zygotebody.com/. Mobile applications of augmented reality maybe best for professional eyeware or hardcore gamers but still way ahead of the average learner or casual user.

The issue is we do have several small startups, but when they need serious cash, they leave. We can't get greater and greater deal flow if all the potential successes/failures leave before they get to that point. Further, if I make six figures in oil and gas, why would I leave to either a) make no money at a soon to be failed startup or b) have to leave Houston for another city in order for my startup to succeed.

I disagree completely. If you had 200 small startups raising only 1m dollars in initially rounds and falling and starting again you would have the infrastructure for people to take a risk leaving the oil jobs and having fun and the downside isn't as severe because you can find another startup to spring board off of. The bigger problem is just not enough early deal flow. Not enough young failures happening over and over again to breed the fertile ground of early stage knowledge, skill, and risk.

I agree completely. The HOV is completely underutilized, and it would provide an excellent initial platform to prove the technolgy and help people get used to the idea. I have no doubts about the computers. The biggest hurdle is getting people to accept driverless cars.

My first aha idea is for struggling large city govts to allow use of barely used HOV lanes and Metro park-n-ride stations for testing driverless vehicles. Google can pay for the build-out of more energy efficient lanes. The city generates revenue. And motorist begin to change their thinking about fears of a "mindless" car stopping in the middle of freeway.

Houston, in particular, can lead this ownership change in its unsustainable car/truck culture. After successful testing and overcoming fears, these vehicles can get incorporated into street driving to deliver people (think work, destinations), packages (think UPS, FedEx, etc) and services (think garbage pickup or street cleanup)
